Creator Gould's Mammals of Australia (1845-1863)

Date 1863

Spefically distinct from rodents of the northern hemisphere, Gould wrote, 'the New Holland Mouse inhabits the plains and stony ridges of New South Wales, both in the districts between the mountains and the sea and those of the interior.'..The New Holland mouse (Pseudomys novaehollandiae) was first described in 1843. It vanished from view for over a century before its rediscovery in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park near Sydney in 1967. Today it is listed as a threatened species, as loss of habitat and vulnerability to introduced predators such as foxes, cats and dogs.
