Date 1842

Map of Norfolk Island, from the time of the second penal settlement 1825–1855. The first (colonial) settlement 1788-1814 had proved to be unviable, was abandoned, and many of the settlers and convicts transferred Van Diemens Land. The map shows the great Norfolk Island pine forests, which once grew to the waters edge, cleared for farms. The rugged character of the coast and the lack of good anchorage is evident. Phillip Island, the last refuge of the wild Norfolk Island Kakas, is shown inset.⁣
